I'm taking my 3 kids camping this weekend with my parents, while hubby stays home (he has to work, and is NOT a camper!). I'm wondering what all I should pack for the kids to keep them busy & occupied. It's a small private peice of land that was given hook up's and what not that my dad's boss owns. It's not a traditional campground- no playground, no camp store, no basketball court, etc. It's on a river, but it's one that isn't suitable for swimming (at least at that spot).

So, what should I take or pack for them? I have not taken them camping since I was pregnant with my youngest, and my middle child didn't do well (he was only 2), so we have not done this before. My kids are 10, 7, and 4. Any idea's?

OK, this is fun with kids that age... bring lanterns so at night you can tell stories, bring marshmallows, so you will burn them in a fire... bring books, if you have, bring a telescope so you can see the stars at night..
It will be so much fun!! an adventure!!

Card games work well on camping trips since they're compact, something like Old Maid or Go Fish. Also travel games like Connect Four would work out well. A compact stereo or CD would work, a Game Boy, books, coloring books and crayons. Just a few suggestions. You could also teach them outdoorsy type things like skipping rocks, fishing, hiking, bird watching and plant identification. Get a couple bird and plant books then take them on a nice hike but don't forget plenty of water and maybe not so far from camp with 3 little ones. But it would be a nice idea before a nap perhaps. ;)

As a mother, your creativity and innovative skills will be tested here. Try to plan some activities that will involve your participation as well. Why not consider some water games with your kids. You can easily find a lot of good ideas that will involve 'water fun'. Try to use any search engine and type 'water games for kids.'

Secondly, if your kids like playing ball, then better bring one. You can in fact play 'touching ball' or 'catching ball' with it.

If you are driving a big vehicle (like a van) over to the camp site, then maybe you can bring your bikes over with you.

Well I do hope that I was able to help. Do have a great time in your camping!

Swingball is always a good bet, never fails with my lot (14 and & 7) Can be good fun for the grown ups too, especially with a glass of wine! Tons of drawing stuff, skipping ropes, hula hoops etc.
Failing that we do regretabley take the childrens game boy and PSP with us for back up. Just don't forget the chargers ! Have a great time, hope the weather is kind !

if there is a flat spot for them to play.. take a soccer ball or any ball.. frizbee. always pack a couple books. Make a scavenger hunt list. Have them look for birds native to the area, certain kinds of trees and plants... I am sure they will find something to keep themselves busy.. but I would definatly leave the gameboys and psp at home.. enjoy nature.

Give them each a scavenger hunt list. They can be harder things for the older kids and easier things for the younger kids. Make it long enough so it will take a while and so they can learn about the outdoors.
