The best litter is the one the cat will use consistently. (I prefer regular clay litter my neighbor swears by scoopable--which btw is not recommended for young kittens) Choose the best spot for the litterbox and then don't move it, ever. Don't switch brands of litter or suddenly buy a new scented-litter that you never used before.
Cats will sometimes respond negatively to changes in their litterboxes.
Keep the box clean, cats are fastidious creatures and don't care for walking through a dirty litterbox. For one cat, you should be able to scoop solids every other day and completely dump and replace the litter every third day. Depends on the elimination habits of your cat.
If your cat is really smelling-up the place when he goes to the litterbox try switching his food rather than buying some new highly scented litter. Ask your vet for food recommendations and advice on how to transition to new food to avoid explosive runny stools sometimes caused by sudden food changes.
Additionally, if your cat ever eliminates outside of the box, take him to the vet immediately. This behavior is almost always a message from the cat that something is wrong. More often than not he's saying he's got a urinary tract infection and it hurts. If the vet rules out medical issues then you can go straight to behavior modification techniques. People too often wait so long that the cat either suffers needlessly with an infection or he gains a "substrate preference" and getting him back to the back can be difficult. Not impossible, but difficult.
That ought to cover it!

Well, I have had 7 cats all at one time and in my life time I have had humm.... 12 cats total. (Not all at once that was in my life.)
I just love cats! >^..^<
So, with that I say the best I have used is Fresh Step. They have this new smell and it is nice plus it does clump tight. I also noticed I use a lot less of it than with many other brands.
PS The crystal stuff is no good at all. Dont waste time or money.
Good Luck with the Kitties! :)

I use Arm & Hammer for my senior guy and Tidy Cat multiple for the 2 youngsters. Tidy Cat seems to work best for the young, smelly guys!! We also have an automatic litterbox - Litter Robot. works great

Tidy Cat Multiple Cat formula

My Mother uses a hefty sprinkle of Baking soda at the very bottom, then pours a generous amount of tidy cat on top.

I really like it.

No stinky pinkies!

For you or for your cat? I like Tidy Cat Scoop because it clumps hard and is easy to clean up after my 3 cats. For your cat though, a non clumping kind is best. Original clay cat litter is best for kitty because it does not have any extra chemicals in it.

I have 4 indoor cats, and I have always found success in using Tidy cat for multiple cats, in the RED container! Never any smells!

The thing is, they plan on changing their formula soon, making the granules bigger, like in the blue container, and I dont like it as well, neither do my cats!!

From personal experience, i wholeheartedly suggest Tidy Cats Multiple Cats...even if you just have one. It really eliminates odor. And for like super protection, put a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda in it.

I use tidy cat, the scopable kind. It works good and it is a fair price.
