I was walkign around wearing a shirt that said, "America, land of the free, home of the brave" but people were being really mean to me and kept yelling to go back to mexico damn illegal. So i got out of that town quick, then ended up in East LA and everyone saw my shirt and they were really friendly. Can't figure it out.

My answer is based on the assumption (maybe incorrectly) that you are either not caucasian or appear to be not caucasian.

Unfortunately, the core reasons to some (not all) people against immigration (illegal or legal) is based on racist views rather than rational thinking. Face it, there are always going to be those people with extremist views who will migrate to issues that appear to support their cause. In this case racists can use immigration as a stage to attack non-whites. It has nothing to do with whether the victim is a legal citizen or not. It is based on the racist assumption that if you are not white then you do not belong here.

Racism is related to ignorance about another race. Places where there is a low or lack of diversity in the population tend to have more racist views over areas where there is a lot of diversity. Hence rural places with less diversity tend to have more racist views than large cities with high diversity. Maybe that's why a large diverse area like East L.A. had no qualms with you.

Note: Although I identified caucasians as racists in my examples above I most certainly do not believe all caucasians or that only caucasians are capable of racism. Racism, unfortunately, spans the entire spectrum of races and ethnicities and any person from any race is capable of being racist against another. I chose caucasian in my examples based on the assumption (again maybe incorrectly) that the people who didn't act too kindly to you were caucasian. That assumption came from the low likelyhood that non-caucasian Americans would tell you to return to your country since they themselves or their relatives likely came from another country and became citizens in the US, and understand that not looking "American" (whatever that means) doesn't equate to not being American.

You got me. Here in good old Kennett Square PA we have a bunch of Mexicans that work in the mushroom houses. We have a, and I am going to say it in English since I will blow the Spanish spelling all to hell '5th of May' Festival for them. We never make the assumption they are illegals, though some probably are.

Do we have some predjudiced people here? Yep. Doesn't everybody? Do we have some Mexicans who are a problem. Yep. And you deal with them as indivuals, not as a nationality.

You should have stayed. You should never run away from opposition, it is what makes you brave. Move back to that town and say, in your face. That is my little opinion on the matter. Don't let opinions of others dictate your life. Were you happy at the other town? If yes, they won.
