Fertilized eggs only will grow a chick. The laying hens don't come into contact with males.

We eat the ones without the chicks in them. The eggs are put through a sort of xray machine that sees inside the shell so the producers know which ones to send to market. Eggs need to be incubated by a hen as soon as it's laid or there will be no chick.
