Because women need to feel wanted ALL the time by everyone. It also puts them in a position of power. She knows he wants her, but he just can't have her. She calls all the shots and can usually take advantage of them emotionally and financially

I believe it's because there's something presently about the man that is unappealing and wouldn't be good for a relationship (religion, bad habits, or something in your past that you don't know she's aware of), but has potential of changing. Just guessing...
