By the late 1970's, asbestos had been largely removed from most products and was mandated out of residential use in 1978.

But older plastics (and all sorts of materials) had asbestos added for strength or temperature rating. I'd guess that the highest levels would have been in the cellulose-based plastics of the 1910s to 1930s. Asbestos was one of the wonder materials of that age and those older plastics needed all the help they could get to be strong and durable.

This sounds like a legal issue and if so, a bit of testing would be a small expense in the big picture. Get older cameras off ebay and send the bits to an asbestos testing labs. I've used NVL in Seattle but any lab certified for asbestos would give you defensible resutls. About $30 per test if you walk in off the street. When we've sent them hundreds of samples for one project, it gets down to $12 or so.

You know, at first I thought you were nuts. Plastics are made from hydrocarbons. Turns out in some cases asbestos was used to strengthen them. I could not find a defitive list, but I suspect it was the cameras themselves that contained them.
