This is what happened to me. It seems odd, so I don't know what to make of it. I live in a small town where a lot of people leave things unlocked, but I know it cities cars do get stolen all the time. I went for a walk to see the sunset when no one else was on the street. On the way back I passed a newish Ford Tauris that had been parked for awhile and obviously belonged to a visitor. At the exact moment I passed I heard and saw the locks click shut, so I looked up and saw the strange blond woman standing on the porch with the remote thingy. I smiled at her but she just stared like some freak. I do not look remotely like a druggy or a criminal.

Am I just overreacting to some random behaviour? Would you think of it differently if you were black or white? I'm white-ish and I'm a quarter native, but I'm only sort of dark like an italian.

If the stupid woman would have smiled back at you this wouldn't have bothered you one bit, would it?
So no, it wasn't rude of her to lock her car at that time, it was rude of her not to return your smile!!
It is amazing how much a smile can do for everybody, but there are some people who couldn't smile if ...if..........if... well, you know what I mean.
You just keep smiling tho, cause it does light up the world, and there's always a chance that yours will be the first smile that someone has seen for the whole day.
In the meantime, I hope that old woman's face cracks.
Bless you.

Well, now you see how Blacks feel when we walk along the sidewalk and people cross over to the complete opposite side of the street, clutch their belongings close to their chest like we're gonna snatch their bag and lock their doors when we are walking to our vehicle if we're parked next to them. It happens all the time and I don't look like a criminal or drug addict either, most of the time I'm overdressed for where I'm going anyway because I believe in dressing up all the time. I just make statements out loud now like, "Damn, nobody wants to steal your car!" or "She acts like we were gonna snatch her damn purse, I have money..." That makes them feel really stupid, you can tell. I'm just fed up with the shyt so I say things out loud to let those know that its unacceptable and rude. I understand that it's a lot of crime going on these days but when I'm minding my own business, I don't appreciate being treated like a criminal everywhere I go.

No its not rude to lock your car when someone is walking by. It could just be that she was locking it at the same time you walked by. But it is rude of her not to smile at you back when you smiled at her , and she was rude to stare. Don't worry I get that too and I don't look like a freak -- people are just rude.

The reason you cannot take it personal is that you don't know this person. They meant nothing at all, in fact if they are like me it was simply bad timing. I cannot tell you the number of times I have remembered to lock my door while someone was nearby and I wondered what they thought.

A lot of people (like myself) have overactive imaginations and are suspicious of anyone who passes by their car. I know that when I lock the car doors when strangers walk by, it's just because they are strangers, not because of what they look like or who they are. But it was rude of that lady not to smile. Some people are just full of themselves!

It is rude and that biatch is racist. Don't let people like that spoil your day, they are the type that add nothing to the world just take away from it. If you talk to her for a few minutes you would see that she is miserable, only unhappy people have time to hate others. The rest of us just enjoy our lives.

I don't think it was personal. I always lock my car when I walk away from it in a parking lot. Better safe than sorry.

I've done it. Even the most innocent of people can be the most horrendous. Look at Ted Bundy. That's how he got women to trust him. He was a white, clean cut college-looking guy. He was also one of the most infamous serial killers of our time.

Don't take it personally. There's so much crime going on these days, you can't be careful enough. From the way you described that woman, she seems like she's very distrusting anyway. She's probably the type who doesn't know her neighbors nor has any desire.
