Not that I'm a racist, but, this past Sunday I had 4 tables for parties of 8 people and they were in this order: white, black, hindu and latin .... All checks were about $100-$125 range and all got awesome service (seriously). My tips were as follows: whites $26, blacks $10, hindus $15 and latin $18. If you do the math all tables left 15% or more except for one. That sucks, I really tried hard with them too, refills like crazy and made sure they never ran out of napkins, always smiling and offering promotions and desserts ... what gives!!!!!!!

It doesn't have to do with race. I would not believe you if you said every table of whites you've ever served always tipped generously or that every table of blacks you serve always 100% of the time give you 10% or whatever.

It may have been a situation where one person in the group did not contribute an adequate amount to the tip and the rest did but the overall tip came out low. That happens. Nobody wants to compensate for somebody else's tip.

I hope next time when you have a table of blacks you won't be dissappointed because it will show to them and again you'll have a problem with the tips.

Good luck

I was a waitress for many years while I was putting myself through school and I can totally relate to what you say in your question. The funny thing is that I JUST brought the same point up with my friend this weekend. I would bust my butt and still end up getting a lousy tip. I know that I cannot generalize and say that was always the case, but more times than none...it was and it began to get really frustrating. I would end up begging other people to take the table just because I knew it would be a lousy tip. I do not know why this is the case...they were not poor to say the least...Maybe it does boil down to a class issue, but I just find it odd that I could get a table of white, lower class people and they would tip at least 18% while "classy", educated blacks only gave 10% if that. Maybe they think we were the ones that enslaved them hundreds of years ago and we owe them...maybe they just don't like us...I don't know, but I have always been courteous and friendly with everyone regardless of race so I find it very frustrating to try so hard and end up getting gilted in the end! It isn't you...remember that.

I am Hispanic but I work with about 90% African Americans. When we order take out I would have to say only about half of them don't want to tip the delivery guy. The other half tip just fine. I believe it has to do with class and the way an individual was raised. Although I have never worked in the service industry it is a pet peeve of mine when people don't tip sufficiently. To be honest it pisses me off. I see how hard alot of waitstaff work and some people are so oblivious to this. These non-tippers or small-tippers aren't aware of their surroundings like they should be. Nor are they self aware.

As an African-American who has worked in the industry myself I'm somewhat perplexed on the subject matter altogether. I have encountered several individuals who would not tip correctly from all ethnicties, and stratospheres. I believe those who don't tip; do it out of lack of knowledge more so than those who are stingy. The stingiest group are those with money, who can afford to put out a decent tip for excellent service. However; those individuals who have never worked in the industry, don't have a clue. Many people think that you get a salary plus tips. What they really don't know is yes but its minimum wage and the government will tax you on dollar amount sold. In addition; patrons aren't aware of the fact; that if a table stiffs you; it comes out of your pocket. So the lesson to those reading this, please tip.

Don't put all African Americans in the same boat actually I have over tipped. That is a stereo type and not all African Americans are the same you just met some people who where cheap. I have worked at restaurants and found all races can have one group that comes in and leaves no tip or not 15%...

Yes they are bad tippers. I asked 2 waiters about this and they confirm this is true. Black people here in texas don't tip anything because they are cheap, inconsiderate and have to save the remaining balance of their FEMA card on beer and cigarettes. Why tip a waiter when they can buy some cheap cigerettes at walmart ?

My husband is Italian and he only like to tip $2.00 no matter what the service. It is really embarrassing. I don't think it has to do with race. I think that it has to do with how cheap the person is. My husband is so cheap that he only order sodas so he can get refills. Sorry honey I know that is hard back breaking work, you guys should get starting $16.00 per hour plus tips.

I have waited tables for 7 years and it IS true!!! I dont understand either but a lot of people really dont understand how hard that job can be. My coworkers and I say there should be a law that everyone has to wait tables at least 1 day in their life so that they can really understand.

some people just don't tip well...it's not a race thing becaues I've seen plenty of whites stiff waitstaff on tips...perhaps that's just what occured that day, to you...some people don't know how much is appropriate to tip, and some people resent being expected to tip at all...they feel the price they pay for the food/beverages is high enough without having to add a tip...

Chalk it up to part of the business you are in...don't take it personally...
