Go to a different vet!

My sister's dog did the same thing, and the vet said that he'd either strained or tore a ligament in his knee...he would've had surgery, but his heart is a little enlarged from a previous bout of heartworm.

The vet told her to massage it and move it gently every chance she gets (when he's lying down) every day. He was on an canine arthritis medication for the pain, but after a few days he was fine without taking it.

If it's just a strained ligament, you might be able to do what my sister did. If it's torn, he might need surgery.

Something similar to this happened to my Lab last year. I took her in and the vet gave her some pain meds and told me if it didn't' get better in a day or two to bring her back in. I let her lay around for a day and she was OK after.
I would give it a day and then if it's not better take your dog back into your vet or to a different vet.

Did your vet take any X-rays? What did you vet say? Just a note alot of times when a dog gets a little hurt they will ham it up for all it is worth... my dogs have done this in the past.

Afraid not. It sounds like he may have the dog equivalent of a sprained ankle, and the only thing that really fixes that is time and rest.

Well there isn't very much you could do but let him rest. You could put some type of bandage on it to ease the pain and so he won't walk as much on it.

Just don't make your dog run or play too much for a while. Even though dogs are in pain they usually can't resist the urge to play if you encourage them :-)
