Aren't visits supposed to be in confidentiality?

Well, maybe your doctor did it out of concern for you, but your doctor should have at least told you he was going to contact a social worker. Who are you gonna trust if you can't trust your doctor? I don't know in which country you live, but in Holland it is customary to tell the patient what's gonna happen. Only in very severe cases something like this would happen, but in most cases it wouldn't be really legal. I hope you have some form of help now, 'cause being depressed sucks. You can get over it though. Hang in there!

Ryan is correct. It is required by law (not sure of all states though) that a physician make an attempt to get help for you; whether he consult psychiatry or "302" you (admit you to a psych hospital or floor).
Your doctor must have felt that you are not a REAL danger to yourself or anyone else so he referred you to a social worker who can arrange that you get assistance from various sources. They only do that as a precaution and to cover their butts legally!

I would recommend a COMPLETE and THROUGH exam! :-P

they are confidential. but if your doctor feels that you could be a danger to yourself or others then it's his responsibility to try to get you the help that you need, although in my 11years of working for doctors i have not had one call a social worker without discussing it with the patient first.

Yes but if he feels that there is something in your home that is causing your depression and for you to be suicidal (which I am just guessing on that part) then he is in his right to sent a social worker over to make sure everything is okay. If he did not he could loose his license. He is just doing his job.

He must want to check on you and your family. Talk to him about it.

It's just part of the doctor's efforts to help you get well. There's no conspiracy. Depression is a problem with a solution and a relativly easy cure if you'll follow your Doc's recommendations.
Good Luck!

maybe it was part of a treatment plan. a clinical social worker is a therapist and works with doctors to provide care.
