When I was little my hair used to be really straight. I cut it short for several years and now i am growing it back out. Now it is curling in different places. It is uneven. is there any way I can fix the problem, besides using one of those electric hair straighteners.

Use a straightening creme, shampoos and conditioners.

Do what I do for the exact same problem. After I finish washing my hair, I wrap a turby twist around it to soak up the extra moisture. Then I comb and part my hair while it's still wet, then I tie my hair back tightly into a pony tail with a scrunchy. I leave it like that until it completely drys. If it's bedtime, after I tie my hair back with the scrunchy, I also tightly tie a bandanna around my head and go to sleep with it like that. As far as unevenness goes, I have a friend cut it for me at home, I tell her exactly how much to cut and to cut it even. In between cuts I use a razor comb that I bought from a beauty supply store to even it out. I've seen one similar to mine in Walmart, it's called "Just a Trim".
Let me know if this helps.

My best guess is just to let nature take its course. My boyfriend's hair look kind of bad when it starts to grow out, but once it gets to a certain length, I can't keep my hands out of it!!

Use a straightener!!!! It's really not that hard, just blow dry it, then use the straightener to straighten it.
