it's 102 outside today here in Dallas. everyday I go outside give my dog fresh ice water, wet him down, wet the whole patio, even wet the grass where I know he often lays. he also has dug this little dirt pile by the corner of the house. I wet that down to. two weeks ago I put an isolating fan out on the patio for him and he loves it. can you think of anything else I can do to make him feel more cool outside during this summer heat? any suggestions please? he's a little over 10 years old and he's currently a very healthy and happy older dog.

he's about 5 lbs. overweight for a beagle I think. at least that's what my vet told me this past year, but other than that he's fine.

i can't bring him inside because I have 2 cats who stay inside and if he were to come in then they would go crazy. I keep my cats inside only because I don't want them ran over or hurt or anything in my neighborhood. I keep my dog outside because I have a fenced in backyard in which he has an acre of land to run around in. my female cat doesn't like my dog. soooo putting him outside is out of the question. if I were to put him in then she would sneak out of the house and runaway because she would be scared.

I've got a Lab and a German short haired pointer that I bring home with me when I have a break from school, and the Dallas heat/humidity just kills them!! You can buy a mister at Lowe's or Home Depot for pretty cheap... it will provide a slight mist all day without using a ton of water. I use one here in Lubbock, and my dogs are constantly sleeping in the mist. I don't know how big your dog is - but I also use a big 15 gallon galvanized bucket (Lowe's, HD for about $15-20) and fill it with fresh water and ice cubes every morning. They sell smaller ones that still hold a good amount of water if you've got a smaller dog. My dogs loved the kiddie pool for a little bit... until they realized it was much more fun to chew up. Good luck! :)

I recommend keeping him indoors as much as possible during the hottest part of the day.You could buy a nozzle for the hose that has a "mist " setting, you don't have to spray him directly, but it will cool the surrounding air as long as it is in the shade. He probably won't like a kiddie pool if he doesn't like water but you can try it, my dog loves hers. There are "cool coats" available through pet catalogs as well as pads to lay on.
Dogs cool themselves through the pads of their feet and by panting, so keeping his pads and belly cool is more effective than wetting him from above. That's why dogs dig holes to keep cool. If he overheats, you can cool him fast by using rubbing alcohol on his pads (I've seen it done by emergency rescue personnel) since it evaprates fast and draws heat away. Never put an overheated dog in a tub of icewater, it can cause shock.

I would say what you are doing so far is very good. I have German Shepherds and i do the same thing. I will tell you one thing though if he dug a hole in the ground that means that he is hot they do that because under the ground it is cooler. I hope this helps you!
I hope your dog is fine to I live in Elgin and it is round 95 right now with heat index of 109.

Build him a big doghouse with a swinging door that stays closed until he pushes on it to open it. Then buy a window unit air conditioner at wal mart and put in on the side of the house and vent it inside. Then run it during the hot hours of the day to keep him cool. Okey-dokey!!

The flat under the bed storage boxes make great water containers they can step in and get their feet cooled off. He may even lay in the water if its big enough for him. My dogs are ready for some snow they don't stay out long in the heat anymore

TAKE HIM IN SIDE! the sun light is making him hot. give him lots of water. even if he does like water fill up the bath tub with cool water just enough to get his feet wet. gently poar the water over him and make sure to have plenty of fans around the house!

Well when you are at home then you could bring him in for a little bit. But if you go somewhere then you could get a sprinkler so that when he does get hot he can go through it. My mom woory's about her pug but someone is here to let him in the house to cool down some.

You should bring your dog inside. I don't understand why people think that dogs are supposed to stay outside ALL the time. People don't.

Kiddie pools are great. And what you're doing is the best you can do for him. Congrats on being a good pet parent.
