In the United States, English is the language of power, and Japanese is not. It sounds like your friends are aware of this, and respond by wanting to learn the language of power. It seems that you recognize that all languages are valuable. It's a shame that they don't.

hmm...well i have a japanese friend who doesnt speak japanese at all. and i also have a book from the library about japnese americans. erm...perhaps ur friend is a little upset that america once took his people to concentration camps (or something like that only not to be killed...) because they thought their country would attack us? so after they were finally accepted they felt like being american was something to be proud of since once upon a time they were not accepted

It's a good question, people in Sweden are very similar, only want to practice English, don't try to teach their language, and if you try to speak with them in Swedish, and realizes that you're a foreigner, they will automatically change to English...

I know a guy like that...his mom was teaching us a japanese phrase (she's from Japan, he was born here) and he started laughing so loud we couldn't hear her, and he pulled her away.
He wont eat Japanese food, he only dates hispanic girls (which there is nothing wrong with, except he talks BAD about japanese girls)...I think he is VERY ashamed of his culture.
People like that want to separate themselves from who they are because they are ashamed of their culture. That is sad....
