There is a Universal Sign Language, but not all sign language is universal. For example, there is an American sign language...which leads me to believe that there are other "national" sign languages as well. But, Universal is supposed to be just that.

Sign language is as different as each of the individual languages. This is due to specific meanings in each language that helps the user communicate better in their own culture. Just as English is used and understood differently in different countries, sign language need to differ for different languages.
But do not be mistaken. Sign language has no connection to the language of the country. It's due more to the place it is used.

No, there is an american sign language, a chinese sign language, a czech sign language, a nicaraguan sign language, etc.
Interestingly, sign language was not developed by the hearing and given to the deaf, but developed by the respective local deaf communities...

There are some universal signs, but they differ from area to area. In America, it is called ASL "American Sign Language"

Right...it all is somewhat the same but each community or deaf individual puts their own "slang" to it. I only know people in the US that do sign, none of them do it completely the same though.
