Bleaching and Pre-lightening are differenet things. If you get a Pre-Lightener (the make LIVE do a good one - trust me, I use it) which will make it go VERY light, and then dye it red, it will not only work but you will have a dramatic effect, and your hair will absorb the exact colour on the top of the box.
It's easy to use, and you can easily do it yourself, or get a friend to do it - there's no need for a hairdresser, and honestly, it WON'T damage your hair! And, you'll only have to bleach it once, because after that, as long as you stick to the same shade, and don't have any highlights, you can just keep dying it red! :-D
Trust me hon, I've done it! ;-)
This is the website for LIVE colour. You can get it almost anywhere, I'm sure you've seen it on TV even. It works great...

i dyed my hair black by mistake, i normally dye it dark brown which is the colour it is naturally but i do it to cover the grey which started coming when i was 16! my hairdresser said to try to strip the colour i could make a paste out of washing powder and a little water, work it into the hair and rinse it out loads, i would follow your hairdressers advice about bleaching your hair, why dont you try lo lights or get a watermelon red to put over your natural colour, your hair wont be red but will have a lovely red lustre! good luck. x

you would have to have the colour stripped which means bleaching it out, then restoring it with colour. it will probably come out ginger, if that's what you want then find a hairdresser's who will do it. or you can buy a chestnut brown colour yourself and just keep using it until it all grows through.
the hairdresser may be more inclined to do it if you were having it cut short. cos stripping the colour makes the hair weak and dry.
if you buy a good hair colour yourself and did it gradually it would be in better condition.
remember bright red will make your skin appear paler.

I suggest trying to reach your natural colour again. Wait for it to fade out gradually and each time you decide to colour your hair go for a shade lighter. It should be easier to achieve the red you want. Maybe try another hairdressers and see what they suggest. Maybe they can give it a bleach bath, this will stip all the colour out therefore allowing and making it easier to have the red ;-)

OK if you haven't perm your hair in the last past 2-3 weeks you can put a blonde in your hair that's a bottle of 30 peroxide and pack of hair lightener. And buy a bright red rinse to but on your hair once your hair is blonde and bright enough for you. If you want your entire head red you must but the blonde all of it. The rinse it out and but the red rinse on it.

Let your hair colour grow out or fade naturally then try dying it the colour you wish. If you are desperate to go red you could always buy a red wig, fashionable of course.

NO. Listen to your hair stylist! Color will not LIFT color. That means you will have to bleach your hair to med/light blonde and then apply the red. More than likely, it will come out bright orange if you do it at home. Please, listen to your stylist. Ask her to take you 1 shade lighter everytime. She can easily do this with a bleach soap cap. This way is much much more gentle on your hair, and as long as you have some patience, you can get your red eventually!

She's right, bleaching and dyeing repeatedly will ruin your hair. I think you should wait and let your hair grow out. Trim the blue-black away as it grows. Once your natural hair is long enough, then you can bleach and color it red.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!
Applying color over the black hair color will not lighten it...you will just end up with hot roots (bright at scalp-muddy on the ends). Ask your stylist about a soap cap (just on the colored ends) a soap cap is a decolorizer mixed with shampoo. Any decolorizer will be some what damaging. If your not happy with your stylists recommendation try another stylist.
REMEMBER -- the brighter the color the faster it will fade
