Considering this is an international web site, it depends what country you are referring to.

If you are talking about some of the Middle eastern countires, Norway, Indonesia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Canada, then they are already quite independent.

If you're talking about the US, and if you want to add global warming into the equation, then nuclear energy is the only rational solution.

Nuclear power is one of the best choices we have as far as an oil alternative. However, there are rich enough oil reserves available in the united states to get us off foreign dependency as it is. We are just not allowed to drill them.

Nuclear power would clearly reduce US dependence on imported oil, but it is politically unworkable right now. France already gets 75% of its electricity from nuclear power. Iran is embarking on a nuclear power program. They have plenty of oil but say they need it for electricity generation and not bomb making. You believe them, right?

So there you have your answer. Maybe, yes and no all at the same time.

Nuclear Energy IS the solution, we do not have it because of self serving groups that profit by filing suits. Look at who is against it and look at what they get from blocking it.
