it's a constant cycle it's more than just the period read up on it

It is actually caused be hormones which are specially programmed by your body to be released at puberty time. The period "itself" is actually a mixture of blood cells,the destroyed corpus luetum(the egg), monocytes(a white blood cell type), along with some non-clotting elements.
