Our armed forces aren't a bunch of gangsters. There is a matter of discipline.

Now adays the military will take anyone.. all you have to do is keep begging the recruiter, but guess what? they get you in and the pick the job for you.. yeah they will give you 11B(Bravo) as your MOS (job title) and that pretty much means combat all day. If you really wanted to get in I'm sure you can. By the way we don't kill people. We are trying to set come kind of order in Pathetic Iraq one of the many countries that can't control their own people. Who ever said that we kill, guess what! we don't but hey I'm sure it was fine with you when out towers were blown up right?? yeah i thought so. When you enlist for the military you know the risks and consequences. It's very sad that ignorant people see us as killers and nothing more. I reccomend you stop watching CNN and start asking combat Vets who have just returned home..... Better yet please watch the Film "Gunner Palace" there's nothing Hollywood about that documentary. I'm not bashing on you by the way whoever posted this question but alot of you with answers see whats going on in the news for about 10 minutes and then you just go back to living your uninformed life................. So thank you to all the military specialist who have the great answers and call us "Honest killers". I find it rather fascinating that many who despise the military would never have the courage to be out here. Thruth is that Diplomacy really does nothing for us when the crazy insurgents decide to strap a 9 year old girl with explosives and have her come up to our gates..... oh yeah but we're the killers right?

The military isn't about commiting crimes. It is about judement self control and following orders.

Criminals have been used in wars all throughout history, what's to stop them from taking what they want and raping, and killing whoever they wanted to. Even though this does still happen there are quite a few incidents. As technology get more and more refined they need the best of the best.

In my opinion criminals don't good judgement, and apparently the military has learned this as well due to history.

Because enough sick people and criminals sneak in as it is and make us look really bad. Didn't you hear about the marines who raped a young girl and murdered her whole family including a 5 year old? We would get more of that if we openly allowed criminals to enlist.

If you are the kind of person who can't follow the local laws of your community, the service feels that you probably will not obey the rules and regulations of the Army.

It's a mistake to think of the services as a dumping ground for social misfits. The services are proud of their members and service-members live by a code of honor.

If a person is no good for civil life then send him off to some penitentiary ( or devil's island ) to live his life.

I am currently serving....

The military doesn't want you with a criminal record because you can't be trusted. You will get in and possibly continue to carry on your criminal behavior.

We don't need someone in that we have to watch our back becauseyou are stealing from us...

Can you be trusted not to kill one of your own before reaching the battlefield...

Can you be trusted with military secrets or will you sell us out to the highest bidder or first bidder??

BUT....
Right now if you wanted to get in with a criminal record...it just might be possible to go to court to get your record/s espounged to serve...

First, what does your criminal record consist of?
If it has to deal with you killing someone, then we don't want you elisting and get all gun crazy.
The reason why the military can or have to right to shoot someone in the time of battle is only when we have been shot at or have been threatened.

Because in the military - killing is a regrettable but necessary duty.

Is a police officer who shoots and kills a criminal in a gunfight a criminal himself?

I take it you have never studied ethics.

Because they want to glorify war, and by preventing criminals from joining the forces it shows them in a credible light.

You've shown you can't follow the rules of society--how could you be expected to follow the orders of you superior officers?
