I try never to be rude and to follow common courtesy.
However, some courtesies change over time.
I now normally hold the door open for the person after me, no matter what their gender, but I don't stand there holding the door.
I follow the "closest to the door, first out" rule in the elevator.
I'm a big believer in "please" and "thank you" as well. I find this lacking in many store cashiers. I have been known not to return to a store if I was not thanked for my purchases.
I think the worst trend is seen here on Yahoo Answers, where expediency is valued instead of content and clarity. Although it is rude, I sometimes point out a question that has such bad grammar that it means something else entirely. When voting for "Best Answer," if two answers have approximately the same content, I pick the one with fewer spelling and grammar mistakes. In this way I try to support good communication.

It is not dead, but it has been severely wounded. And to answer the other questions. It can be national, but not always. * America does seem to be the worst for letting it ride if the money keeps flowing* The reasons for this is the mentality being breed into our society. No good father figures sometimes, lot's of variables. It will get worse. The bible says that evil men shall get more evil, and that children's disrespect for adults shall increase more and more. What we can do, is allow the light and love of Christ to shine through us in this world. Be the salt ya know! Not hammering a doctrine down someones throat, rather follow what Christ said. When you feed the hungry, visit those in jail or prison, clothe the unclothed, help the sick and weak, and when you do this to the least of people, Christ Said, " you are doing it to me".

I believe you are correct, and yes common courtesy has become less pronounced. It's not a national trend but a global warning of things to come. We as citizens of earth have lost our touch for communication with one another, because of new inventions such as: cell phones, voice mail, long car commutes, extended work hours, and many more. Our schedules have evolved into instant gratifications, and our attention span has been dramatically shorten to less than 60 minutes. Lastly common courteous is on the slippery sloop because of this new trend of the World should be more responsible in their action except for ME. With a selfish attitude; courtesy has a huge challenge ahead of itself.

With all due respect, dear Sir, people of the US have been rude by all common standards for a long time. While I do not mean to contradict you, what I am seeing is just the opposite; there seems to be less tolerance for rude behavior and expression (except of course on the Internet). Thank you for the opportunity to share my limited expression with you. Please have a good day. Again, thank you.

I don't consider myself rude but I have moments when I am a little curt.
People are no more, no less rude than they ever were. It's just that everyone seems to have an opinion and a means to voice it.

Influx of non-European (non-chivalrous) cultures and the media's glorification of ghetto culture is largely to blame. It can only get worse. I am not rude. People where I live are generally polite.

It's not dead, just pretty sick. There will always be a few people who are polite, but that number is shrinking.
