Wow, all these answers and no common sense.

Well, one of the biggest contributions could be the tradition of "arranged" marriages. Now, this is not to be confused with "forced" marriages, which, although forbidden in Islam, still do happen unfortunately. In an arranged marriage, word gets out that such and such is looking for a spouse and wants these qualities, a friend or family member says hey, I know just the perfect person. The two meet with their families, have discussions, make plans and get married if they both feel compatible.

Here in the west, arranged marriages are a horrible terrible "slave trade" that is destined for disaster and woe the poor woman who gets caught in a marriage like that! we tend to romanticize marriage way too much, and pay more attention to that than to the qualities that the person has (how they are as a parent/spouse, how they control their anger, how responsible they are, how much they take the time to care for others, etc). What the west pays more attention to is how much this person makes my heart flutter, how good they are in bed, etc. After a while, romance tends to die out even in the best relationships. When that happens we usually don't like what's left over. During the "arrangement" part of an arranged marriage, the intended couple ask questions of each other to know what they will be like in 10 or 20 or 50 years, they ask the family members and friends, they test each other. Sort of like a business deal! You wouldn't want a partner who spent all his time writing romantic poems and neglecting his responsibilities (physically, financially, emotionally, socially, intellectually, spiritually) and putting a strain on the business, why look for that in a spouse?

In Islam, women are allowed to separate themselves from their husbands if they wish. It's not called "talaq" or divorce but rather "khula" or shedding/separating.

Unfortunately, what Islam teaches and the practices in countries that claim to be Islamic countries aren't always the same. Kinda like how America promotes "Freedom" but it's only really there for some.

You people bore me...

Since women are considered as second-class citizens (little better than property) for a man to end the marriage is very easy - he tosses her out. If he complains that she cheated, she gets stoned to death as well. For a woman to get a divorce is almost impossible.

I think it has something to do with divorce bringing shame on a family. But it's kinda unfair if you are part of an arranged marriage and you don't like your partner cos there's no way out without this sense of 'dishonour'

Divorce in muslim country means "dead" for the woman and that she will be considered as a whore

Well they would rather die or kill each other than to divorce, so I wouldn't say that is better than divorce. Also they can have more than one wife at a time. No one should ever have to live unhappily, life is too short.

That's simple. Women are not permitted to file for divorce, and Muslim men are free to have sex outside marriage.

If divorce is basically illegal, people don't get divorced.

Because you can have multiple wives. If you get bored with one, instead of divorcing her, you simply marry another one.
