When a boxer is knocked down by a punch and fails to rise to his feet before a ten count has been given by a referee he is ruled knocked out, or, is said to have been KO'd. Generally speaking a boxer failing to protect his head is asking to be KO'd. A true knockout occurs when a boxer takes a direct blow to the jaw from a (hard enough) punch thrown at a right angle. This will cause a sharp snapping head motion, which can and often does compress the carotid artery. This argument is often used by doctors who oppose boxing. These doctors are correct in the effec, which can be a brief state of sleep, like Roy Jones can attest to, and the minor stroke, like Roy Jones can attest to. Look at Roy Jones/ Glen Johnson. Look at his head hitting the canvas, compare his right side to his left, look at his eyes. Roy was truly knocked out. Roy did not defend himself properly. In addition to getting hit in the jaw, one can also be knocked out by the same type of blow on the chin, or, on the temple. Occassionally, boxers are floored by body shots. Truly these wins/ ko's are works of art, also. Hope I answered your question to your liking. One last note---------If you are a fighter, remember to keep your guard up...regardless of how good of puncher you are, you will never beat a fighter with the same punching ability without defense. Gotta make him miss to make him pay. Good luck-

there are a lot of factors actually why boxers get knocked out, here are some of the few ... lack of practice - less conditioned fighters will eventually get tired after a few rounds ... fear - if fear caught you and if your opponent noticed it, he will get a lot of momentum to demolish you right away ... punching power - if it hits you on the kidneys, you will slow down and suddenly lay flat on the ground and if it hits you in the head, you will see some birds flying around you and you don't know where the hell are you ...
