I thought this was one of the most important teachings that Christ left behind. Why don't more people practice this ideal?

Matthew 5:38
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40
And if any man willsue thee at the law, and take away thy coa, let him have thy cloke also.
41
And whosoever shall comel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42
Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Suzanne, I am pretty sure I understand it, but explain to me the wars that are supported by Christians, ie the war in Afghanistan after 9/11. The message we are sending these people is one of hypocrisy. Not an effective means of communication is it.

There are many more examples that we Christians do not follow as we should. This one is no more important than any other thing Christ spoke. I believe we do not take Christ's teachings seriously. Instead we focus on having fun at church with our friends. The teachings of Christ are much more important than "contemporary" services.

I agree with you. I think for some reason we Christians are very worried about our own rights and standing up for them. I would say it is cultural but I think it really is a sin problem.

Matthew 5
5:38
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'
5:39
But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
5:40
And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
5:41
If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
5:42
Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

You probably do not understand the true meaning of this teaching. Matthew 5:38-42 pertains to how believers should act when being physically confronted by an evil person (v. 38). Instead of arguing, we are to remain silent; instead of fighting, we are to do whatever it takes to calm the situation. Where is your evidence that, overall, Christians and Messianic Jews do not do this?

And even if we don't consistently obey this teaching, we have a forgiving Savior, who promises we will never be judged for our sins.

In answer to your comment: see my comment above. Also, atheists deny this is a Christian nation when it's convenient; but when you want to challange Christian beliefs, suddenly it's as if Jesus Christ Himself is our President! You cannot have it both ways. America's wars are not Christian wars. They are wars conducted by a country. Even if my 16 1/2 yr-old son was old enough to fight, he would be a conscientious objector because of his deep Christian values and faith. But I will not judge a Christian who chooses to go to war; it's not my place, and neither is it yours.

No it isn't about an eye for an eye. It is about turning the other cheek. I think some do practice this. Not everyone of them but some of them.

Why do you think I'm still here?

Anymore, I have to wade through 2-3 pages of animosity, critism and hate to find a valid question to answer.
