He says it constantly... instead of saying a curse word, or some other word, he says every possible form of the Lord's name... I know he doesn't mean to upset me. he's my best friend, but he's not very religious like me... it just really bothers me when he says it though...

Simply explain to your friend that you do not expect him to hold the same beliefs that you do, however you would appreciate it if when he were around you, that he would respect your beliefs by not using the Lord's name in vain in front of you.

Your friend does not have to be religious in order to be respectful. If you explain it in this way, instead of trying to push your beliefs on him, then he should understand. It's more of a respect of you as a friend issue than it is a religious issue. If he is a true friend, he will respect your beliefs and refrain from using this language when he is around you because he should understand that it offends you.

You mean like god damn, or something similar?....you really should look up the meaning of the word vanity...excessive belief in one's own abilities or attractiveness....I don't know who the hell come up with the idea that saying things like that are taking the lord's name in vain...taking the lord's name in vain is when you say you believe to fit in (or say that you don't) with the crowd...to make yourself look good or acceptable to the crowd you are in...

the definition does go on to say "In some religious teachings vanity is considered a form of self-idolatry, in which one rejects God for sake of their own image, and thereby becomes separated from the graces of God." Even with this, using those phrases is not taking his name in vain....how is using a phrase like that self-idolatry? how is that rejecting god for the sake of their own image?

And it even specifies that SOME religious teachings...if some do it, and some don't....who's to say which one is right. When I say it, it's my own little way of praying to god that he will damn the (fill in the blanks with whatever I'm upset about).

I have to assume you've tried to get him to stop offending "God (if there is one). He may/might be profaning because you've been pushing that God, goodie, goodie belief system on him and he's not interested. Better to use the Lord's name in vane than yours, right? Is the friendship more important than your faith? My opinion is that it's time you examine that question. For me my friends are more important than my faith regardless of how they beleive. I advise you to reexamine your faith...start by checking out WWW.UUA.ORG...I think you'll find a tolerant/understanding group of like minded people that believe HUMANITY comes first. PEACE!

Send him an anonymous letter saying he uses the Lord's name in vain and he says it like it's a cuss word.
I have a coworker like that and I cringe everytime she calls Jesus' name because she says it like it's an "f" word.

Just tell him in a nice way that you are a Christian and that you would appreciate it if he didn't use the Lords name in vain.

Public reprimand works. I tried that on my husband after telling him that I found that really offensive, and after snapping at him in public after he said it, he has cut way back and apologizes after slips now. Good for you for not wanting your friends to take the Lord's name in vain. Good luck.

God Damn! Really? Get the pole out of your butt. It's insensitive of you to expect your friend to censor himself to make you feel better. Instead, why not get over it and enjoy his company? I do the same thing, and personally, I like it better than when people spew four letter words. Be a little more flexible.
