I recently decided to be a grown-up and got my own apartment. I have always had roommates. I have been there five months now and I finally had a house warming party. As a present my friends (god love them) rescued a cat for me. My lease does say No Pets however I do not have a landlord or a super living in our building. She's really cute, clean, litterbox trained, etc etc etc. So here is my question. If you found out that someone had a pet in your building would you call the landlord or keep it to yourself?

I'd keep it to myself. Just as long as people know the rules of keeping pets in apartments. Most landlords will allow pets, of particular size. If your apartment is huge, you can have a big dog. If small, a small dog is advised. For cats, I think you should be fine, sizewise. ;-). Best wishes for the little darling! Thanks for rescuing her. It feels sooo good to adopt/rescue animals. Enjoy!

that's a though one.

if your lease say no pets then your breaking your contract with the landlord. which can get you into alot of troubles legally wise, he can sue you for it.

best thing to do is either try and talk to your landlord tell that someone gave you a cat and see if you can change the lease, maybe commit to cleaning up the place when you will move out from the smell if he still says no either try and a find an animal friendly apartment or if want to stay at your place see if one of your friends or family member will be willing to take him.

i myself as an animal lover would not say a word on someone having an animal. but then again once i'll be on my own i will make sure to live in an animal friendly place.

Unless your cat yowled all night, I would mind my own business. However, I don't live in your building.

Since your lease says no pets, and you want to keep this cat, talk to your landlord. Do NOT say that you already have a cat.

DO say that you are thinking of getting a cat. Assure your landlord that you would spay/neuter and declaw this future pet. This way, neither you nor your landlord will need to worry about spraying or clawing of furniture. Ask if you can amend your lease agreement to allow a neutered and declawed cat.

Most landlords appreciate honesty. If you show that you understand their concerns (property damage), generally they will work with you.

If you can come to a meeting of the minds, you will be able to amend the lease. You won't have to worry about being evicted because you violated your lease. Then, it won't matter if someone finks on you.

If it's not causing me problems I would mind my own business.
If there was a smell in the building from a cat box or little cat droppings started showing up in the halls I would complain to the cat owner first and then the landlord if nothing changed. Some people will just go straight to the landlord.
If your cat is well behaved and stays in your apartment your neighbors won't have a reason to complain.
Some people enjoy complaining. I hope they don't live in your building.

ive been in your situation, our 4 plex wasnt allowed pets, but we rescued 2 cats, well trained and clean, and to tell the truth.i was amazed by how many other ppl in area had pets as well....like a secret or something..i feared neighbors would rat on us but really,it's none of their business, and they should keep it to themselves...really you should at some point find apt that allows pets,we have moved since then, and it feels great,no worry about cats roaming around or locking them up when the landlord comes...alot more freedom.anyways.good luck

It is actually going against the lease and if your landlord was serious about it, could kick you out for disobeying the lease (which is possible). However, go to your landlord and ask her/him if it'd be possible to pay a deposit to keep the cat- because that's what we had to do with ours. So talk to your landlord about it and if he/she says no, it wouldn't be fair to everyone else who wasn't able to have a pet.

I would not tell the landlord as long as there was no bad smells or too much noise, A cat is a clean animal and no trouble, they should be allowed. Good Luck.

It all depends on how the owner takes care of his/her pet. If there is a smell coming from the apartment or condo then action must be taken. If the owner is keeping the pets clean and healthy then i would not say a word at all.

I personally, would keep it to myself. It really isn't any of my business. As long as your cat wasn't getting into my apt. and peeing on my furniture or anything like that.Even then I would talk to you before I called the landlord. However, there are many people that are immature and would probably call the landlord immediately. So be careful. Hopefully you are lucky and your neighbors wont notice and/or care. Good luck.
