i use a program called 'carbon copy cloner'. i have a mac but ccc might work for pc as well. basically all you need is an external hd. partition it and make it bootable. ccc software will allow you to copy everything or just essential files. the external hd will be used to boot up the computer by proxy and will contain your backup. in case your comp crashes you can just boot up the external hd and copy the files to your comp. ccc is a freely downloadable program. just google it.
