An immigrant can apply for citizenship after continuous residence in the US for 5 years (that means 5 consecutive years as a permanent resident) and after continuous residence for 3 years if married to an American citizen.
If you leave the country for periods longer than 6 months (or 1 year) at a time, it is possible that your continuous residence will be interrupted and you would have to wait at least 4 more years to apply for citizenship.

depending on how you obtain your green card? if you got it thru marriage, you can apply after you have it for 2 years and 9 month. if you already have a green card before you marry, it's 4 years and 9 month
