With only one day you will need to make good plans ahead of time. If you call your congressman you might be able to get a scheduled tour of the capital. You've got to see it, and the White House, at least from the outside. You CAN'T visit Wash DC without seeing those two places! There is the White House Visitors Center, also that you might want to check out. Most people would probably want to go to at least one of the Smithsonians; Air and Space is really popular but I personally prefer the American History. Check out the National Mall, where you can see the Lincoln Memorial, Viet Nam Memorial, WW2 Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial. This is alot of walking and will probably take up most of your day. And there aren't too many eating places in the Capital area, so bring snacks or use the cafeterias and food courts in the various federal buildings. Be ready for lots of security screenings as you enter each building.

If you only have one day, spend it at the "Mall"...but even then, do your homework...decide in advance which of the Smithsonian museums you'd most like to visit. Do you like space and airplanes? Visit the Air and Space Museum. Would you like to learn about the 'first' Americans? Visit the National Museum of the American Indian (go EARLY in the morning to get a free ticket, which has the admission TIME on it). The variations are endless. I'd keep it down to 2, but no more than 3...otherwise, you'll be running through them without really seeing anything!

One day = Smithsonian, I would hit Air & Space, American history, and the National Gallery of Art, other to consider Native American Museum, and the re-opened Portrait Gallery
National Gallery of Art
Also on the Mall is the National Archives
If you don't like art:
Spy Museum
National Zoo
Walk the National Mall and people watch
Library of Conress and the US Capitol
Happy Hour at Hotel Washington (rooftop bar overlooks Whitehouse and Treasury Department)

One whole day in Washington DC? You can see everything easily.
Start by relaxing in your hotel until around 10 a.m., go to the Burger King for an authentic power breakfast, take the tour of the Capitol, tour the entire Air & Space Museum, tour the entire Natural History Museum, go to the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument and a leisurely walk around the Tidal Basin.
It should now be time for lunch. Go to McDonalds where you might see Donald Rumsfeld having a lunch with Condeleeza Rice. It should now be around 1 p.m. Continue your tour with a walk to the Bureau of Engraving & Printing, a jaunt to Arlington Cemetery and a quick jog to Mount Vernon.
Jog back to the National Mall and see a session of the proceedings at the US Supreme Court, tour the National Archives, and tour the entire National Gallery of Art. This should bring you to the end of your touring day at around 4 p.m.
It is now time for the "early bird dinner" at either Morton's Steakhouse or The Washington Palm. You can get either a 28 oz porterhouse steak or a 2 lb lobster dinner complete with all the trimmings for $7.95.
Go back to your hotel knowing that you have only scratched the surface of things to see in Washington and that you have done everything at a leisurly pace.

Here's a list:
- Holocast Museum
- Air and Space Museum
- National Zoo
- Smithsonian Natural History and American History Museums
- Take pictures of the White House and US Capitol
I think that'd take a day right there...I'll stop.

Any of the Smithsonian museums are great. They're all near each other too so you can see a couple of them, They're also all free which is amazing. The National Gallery of Art and the American History Museum are my 2 favorites but it depends on what you're inerested in. Like I said they're all great.

Stay out of the HEAT! Go to Capitol Hill. It's mostly indoors. There is a lot of places to eat up there. Or the Spy Museum I can spend all day there. I work for Smithsonian so if you want there is always them.
