If you want the best bait it would be the ole crappie minnows that you can buy at any bait and tackle store. the big secret is to fish the minnows around brush or trees that have layed down into the water. crappie hang out in these type places. good luck

Chartruese or white curl tail grubs fished very slow around submerged brush and trees . right now here (GA)they're in 16 to 20 ft. of water on points and in creek channels hard to find and light biters-using 16th oz or 1/8th size jig heads. at night check out bridge pylons, lighted docks, 10 to14 ft. deep using jigs or small minnows.if you have a boat and graph stay in the 20 to 25 ft. depth looking for the thermocline crappie won't be far from it, and of course bait must be present, which will show up on your graph.later bas the water cools they'll move back shallow into the creek mouths and shallow brush and docks. one good rule to follow, if you ain't losing jigs by hanging up , you ain't in the right spot or fishing them slow e'nuff.

My husband and I always use blue/white jigs. We've always done well with them.
