My Dachshund puppy is terrified of my stairs. I have to carry her up and down many times a day. I've tried sitting on a step to get her to come up one by one and tried pulling her with a leash up, nothing works. She's scared stiff and cries whenever I try to get her to go up. She can go down if I leave her in the center of the staircase, but not from the top. Is she physically unable to go up because of her long frame? Any tips to help her with this?

I have a mini dachshund

NO it is not physically impossible for her to go up stairs. My dog runs up and down the stairs at my mom's house. He goes up those stairs so fast that it looks like a speeding bullet.

Have you tried putting her in the middle of the stairs and they walk up to the top, go into another room and see what happens. That is what i did. Now he will go up any and every stairs that he is allowed to.

Also, some dogs are just plan scared of stairs. My parents dog will not go up the steps at all. He is a big dog, so he never gets go to go upstairs becasue of it. I do not know what to tell you to do about getting her to use the stairs.

I just wanted to let you know that it is NOT physically impossible for a dachshund to go up and down the stairs.

Stairs are very high things that most animals are not accustomed to seeing. For smaller dogs and puppies it's like trying to scale a mountain with no visible end to it.
Most puppies that grow into larger dogs grow out of this, especially when they want to spend more time with the person that's just gone up or down the stairs, leaving them behind. For smaller dogs, however, it's most difficult because not all of them can easily climb the stairs without having to jump due to their significantly shorter legs. If she's so terrified of them, why not leave her be?

If it really is *such* a bother to you carrying her to go up and down, try tempting her with some bacon or dog treats. It'll take time, but if she wants it enough she'll give it a go.

My dog is a Scottie and he has some difficulty going down the stairs because of his longer frame. He has to go down sort of sideways. I'd say leave her alone until she's a little bigger and maybe put some treats at the top and bottom of the stairs- my dog would jump over a live lion for a milk bone!

We've always had dachshunds and they've never had problems with stairs when they were younger. It might be good that she is scared because the vets always tell us to not let them jump a lot or go up and down the stairs (both of which are impossible) because later in life they have problems with their backs because they are so long with such short legs.

my puppy was like this for a long time. I think yours will just learn in time. I used to sit on the stairs and try to tempt her to go up with treats. Eventually she got less and less scared, until she was bounding up and down them. Now I wish she didn't know anymore, so that I could keep her out of that part of the house.

She'll get used to it. My brother in law has had 3 doxies in his 2 story.

One of my pugs was afraid of our stairs at first. Puppies are even more sensitive.

How long have you been trying - I think she will naturally grow out of this stage as she gets used to the stairs.

I think her body would be a hinderance. Some dogs are afraid a theres nothing you can do about it. But it shouldn't be a problem since she's so small and you can carry her.
