How do I stop this?

Although a dentist may have expensive mouth pieces you can purchase....
try giving your self a TMJ massage.

When you open your mouth, feel the TMJ muscles by touching your checks. Keep your fingers on that muscle, close your jaw, and make small circular motions on and around that area (including an upward direction to your temples). This helps relax your TMJ muscles. Try this for a week and see if it helps. Good Luck

There is nothing you can do yourself to stop it but you need to see a dentist asap. I started doing this about a year ago, I finally realized what i was doing after waking up for about a week with jaw pain and headaches. I went to the dentist and had a night guard made for my mouth. Now the night guard won't stop you from clenching but it will prevent you from doing any more damnage to your teeth. I could not tell I had done anything to my teeth but the dentist said I had taken some of the enamel off while clenching and grinding. I noticed that when I have the mouthguard in I don't do it as much but still do it. The only thing the dentist has told me and I've been able to find is that its caused by stress.

I do the same thing - my dentist thinks it's from stress. I also do it during the day and don't realize it right away. My doctor made a NITI for me it's a night time gaurd that snaps on your front two teeth. It took a little while for me to get used to, but at least now I don't wake up with my teeth hurting or a headache from my mouth being clenched so tight. I would highly recommend asking your dentist about it. I don't have the greatest dental insurance, but even with the one I have it didn't cost very much at all, it's definetly worth it even if you don't have insurance.

You will need to get a night guard from a dentist. I have had one for over 10 years and it helps immensely. In order to relieve tension in the jaw you can get massage done on it. It feels amazing. You should keep track of other times you clench your teeth like when you are focused or frustrated.

YOU NEED A BRUXISM APPLIANCE. AKA nightguard. Contact your dentist for an appointment. He/she will make alginate molds of your mouth and have an appliance constructed from these. You should wear it everynight. The bad affects of clenching can be, your sleep interrupted, headaches, and your teeth will over a period of time, wear down. Not good. Call your dentist. Goodluck!

You're under a lot of stress,

Relax before you go to bed, calm yourself throughout the day
No TV or news before bed.. stuff like that

You could also try a mouth guard when you sleep, it wouls cushion the bite so it migh not wake you up as easily

Sometimes it's stress. Sometimes it is because your bite is uneven. My dentist gave me an anti-inflammatory and had me buy a mouth guard like athletes use - warm it in hot water to soften then put it in your mouth and bite on it gently to form to the shape of your teeth. It helped...
