People like to have a standard method of doing things it helps prevent confusion and promotes efficiency.

I'm sure there are some jars out there that have their threads reversed so that they open clockwise instead of counter clockwise, but to make the mass production of jars & lids efficient enough to make it a profitable market it needed a easy to remember standard.

Righty-Tighty Lefty-Loosey.

That is an interesting question! I have lived in several places in the world, and I can not remember any containers having anything but clockwise movement.

In the sixties Pontiac used lug nuts that screwed on counter clockwise on one side of the car. But I don't ever recall a jar not going clockwise.

Why? I don't know!

I presume that most of the world's population are right-handed. So opening the jars in an anti-clockwise direction would make it easier for them....

Leftie = Loosie, Rightie = Tightie.
Turn anti-clockwise, you loosen. Turn clockwise, you tighten.
This rule of thumb applies to all screw attachments, screws, lightbulbs, jar lids, bottle caps etc.

It's not only jars though... screws, bolts, the nob on any propane tank... they all tighten when turned clockwise... and loosen the other way around. It's an international convention. As simple as that.

It's a standard. Otherwise, the makers of jars would have to pay more to find makers of clockwise lids.

All common items with a screw type fastener (screws, nuts, bolts, jars, water hoses, etc) screw to the right to tighten and to the left to loosen. Thus the saying, "Righty tighty, lefty loosey"

It was standardized a long time ago.

Who cares why. Aren't you glad they all open one direction? Imagine if you had to take the time to figure out which way every jar opened. I don't question, I'm just grateful.

Yes, it is a conspiracy that dates back to the arrival of Hkgirnmdljfj and his buddies from Tortentia 4 in 1743. They travelled a great distance to ensure that humans would only open jars one way... unlike today's tech people who can't decide which format is best for DVDs.

it's way to hot to be doing this today.................
