I was born and raised in Los Angeles and the only reason I stayed was because my whole family was there and I knew nothing else. I agree with the previous answer's points. It took me years to finally get up enough money to move away, but I'm glad I did. It's a hard place to live in, in many, many ways.

No. There are good features to Los Angeles, but also a lot of downside that makes it a difficult place for anyone to live, never mind a newcomer trying to meet people. For example:

1. No public transportation. You have to drive everywhere, and the freeway system is a nightmare. And then you are breathing polluted brown air all the time because of all the auto exhaust.

2. No real heart to the city. Downtown LA is deserted at night. LA is really just a collection of about 20 different suburban towns that happen to be right next to each other. Except in a few isolated pockets here and there, there is no real sense of community.

3. Not big on arts and culture. The film industry dominates, but for music, art, theater there are some resources, but again they are very scattered geographically and you have to drive forever to get to them.

And anywhere in California, the job market is rough and the cost of living is the highest in the United States. Hard to understand what this means until you pay your rent and pay for your car... and find that there is nothing left, even though you work hard at a decent professional job.

Alternatives that are much friendlier for a newcomer starting a new life: Portland, San Francisco (but not unless you have a job first, rough market), Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Reno. Good luck to you.

I can't agree with the previous answers.
I moved to LA 13 years ago and can't imagine living anywhere else.
True there is traffic, but any metropolitan area can say the same.
True you have to drive everywhere, but the trade off is that you're free to come and go on your own terms.
The pollution is not so bad, actually the air got cleaned up over the last decade because of the tough environmental laws.
The weather is wonderful, atmosphere laid back, living is affordable if you're smart about it.
I love it here and if I had to do it again, I would.

No way,
you cant be at peace anywhere if you are not proud of your heritage, you being Asian and yet you condemn us,
no matter who or what you are angry with, you are still an Asian.

so, deep inside, you hate yourself. how to start a new life when you still hate?

easy to solve.... go die and maybe re-incarnate as something else.
