Thanks missbehave, I had forgotten "Crying are you, I'll give you something to cry about".

I think parents used to come with a text book of daft sayings, my mom was so fond of saying, "don't you look at me in that tone of voice", still haven't worked that one out to this day, my favourite was the one she used to say to my brothers who were forever climbing walls, "If you fall and break your legs then don't run crying to me", like you could run with a broken leg hey, don't know were they got them from but some of the saying parents came out with were so funny and I bet there are loads of moms and dads today saying the same things to their kids.

I heard the second expression as a young kid and thought it would be cool to have done to me. So one day I did something (I don't remember what now, I was hit pretty hard in the head) that got me literally knocked into next week. The rest of my life, I've been one week ahead of my parents. Ever since then, I've been laughing out of every side of my face.

It means that while something is going well for a person, or they are happy, something will happen to change that so that they are no longer happy.

For example, you get to go to a lot of parties and you don't study as much as you should - if you fail your exams as a result, you'll be laughing out of the other side of your face.

When you say you are going to knock someone into the middle of next week, it means you are going to hit them very hard.

I agree with quozy, it means they would hit you so hard, it would knock your smile to the other side of your face. I've actually never heard this term before and I'm 34.

I have heard the other one, "knock you into the middle of next week" and that just means they would hit you so hard, it would knock you out and you wouldn't wake up until next week. I love that phrase! LOL

Forget about that - Here's some better one's.........

I'll hit you so hard your grandkids will feel it !
I put you into this world - and I'll take you out of it !
When I get done with you you won't sit down for a week !
and the ever famous "Wait till your father gets home" !
Aaaah, those were the good ol days.
Have a wonderful day :)

Oh, the memories you've brought back!

My parents used both of these expressions, and I never understood either of them. If you're "laughing out of the other side of your face," you're still laughing. And, frankly, a little time travel sounded like fun.

Of course, I'm sure I've said things to my son that didn't make any sense. Guess that's one of the dangers of parenthood.

Yep, that was an old standby.
One of Dad's other favorites was. "the whole thing in the nutshell"
And Mom's favorite, when she was really mad, "and I don't mean perhaps".

Dad's been gone for several years now. Mom's still with us but every time I talk with her I can hear her age more and more in her voice. I've been preparing myself for the phone call that will come one of these days...

Thanks for the memories!

Yeah, don't smart mouth me or you'll be laughing out the other side of your face. OR Don't sass me or you"ll wake up next week. They never did anything but it did mean shut up and go to your room.

hm, I have never heard that one. Sounds like if your embarassed or upset about it something now--- when you look back, you'll laugh! Maybe to make you feel better? And I have been told I would get slapped to next week, month, year.. lol Never happened thankfully.

Yes... all the time!!! I was so cheeky! I used to make my smile go lopsided to the other side of my face.... lol... I don't know how I made it to adulthood.

My mum also used to say... "if I hear one more pip out of you" I could never resist saying "pip" then running like hell.
