I realized that I do a lot better if I flirt with the girl first and then no matter how serious I get after that the girl is always interested. Is that true?

It's a way of breaking the ice and indicating that you are interested... so, yeah, it's very helpful.

It may just be your charisma. Girls like to be flirted with. Is it necessary? No. You could just be direct. You will get some to go out with you. Not as many though. Flirting is fun and you'll always pick up more women by flirting.
