Making a decision to get a dog of a certain breed based a couple of owners' opinions may not be the best way to decide if a breed is for you. I recommend you find and talk to several REPUTABLE breeders Dal breeders or contact a Dalmation club.

Professional breeders are very interested in matching their dogs with the right people and typically won't sell to people who aren't good fits.

Also, check out www.akc.org for a good description of the typical dal.

Each individual dog has it's own personality and temperment, but each breed has overall characteristics that should be present in the individuals.

My friend has a Dal. It's a really nice dog. He's about two years old, named Flash, and is a neutered male. My friend bought him b/c he is a firefighter, and thought that a firefighter should have a Dalmatian. Unfortunately, the dog is not trained, under socialized, and lives in the back yard. That's the problem of buying a dog for how it looks, not b/c you really want a dog. However, the dog is one of the nicest dogs I met! He's kind, affectionate, never bites me. He gets along well with the other two dogs that he lives with. He's a bit hyper, but that's normal for the breed. If you are willing to spend the time training and exercising the dog (more so than most dogs) and pick a dog from a really good breeder or rescue (never a pet store)(badly bred Dals are prone to some serious behavior issues), then you will have a loyal, friendly dog that certainly draws attention! Good luck!

I've never owned one but I worked at a vet clinic for a few years. The dalmations who boarded there were always snappy and viscious, unfortunately. They are generally known for being bad with children, prone to biting....
