That's a good question.
I guess whoever named an elephant an elephant had a good reason too.
I mean it's logical that a fly is called a fly because it flys and it was probably the first thing that the person who named it thought of first when they saw the fly flying.
Still this is a great question.

Coincidence of wording..."fly" is a noun and a verb (and, in slang, it's also an adjective) "Yo! Look at that fly over there! Man, it can fly! That's really fly, man!"
Elephant is a noun. Like rhinoceros. "You, you wanna rhinoceros tonight?" Doesn't work.
