Is there a particular type of stone used for runes?

No, you may chisel the symbols into any rock soft enough for you to chip them into. They should be uniform in size and shape though so that your casts will be fair and equal. There's a Book of Runes I forget the Author...It came with good stones. PEACE!

You can use any - I made some from ceramic clay and I have seen some really neat ones from antlers.
