Serious respectful question, not attacking Jesus or Christians. A friend of mine emailed me last week telling me he was having suicidal thoughts; he was committed to a hospital where he met with a counselor who through their discussion he now thinks the church he is a member of is bad for him.

One of the things the church did was tell him to not have a crucifix. Is this the will of God, or is this cult behavior.

Since there is no empirical evidence of God, we don't know how tall he is or what he has on his walls in heaven, how do we know God is against crucifixes?

I mean this respectfully and not as an attack on Christians or Jesus. I think one can have an authentic life and belief in Jesus.

I am asking a serious respectful question and don't want the usual crap of jim darwin needs jesus or he goes to hell; or god is imaginary.
Thanks.

I've never heard of a church dissaproveing of crucifixes. That must be a cult of some kind, or just that particular pastor's ideas. The church has always supported the practice of a carrying a cross, even if it is just hanging around your neck. There is one guy who walks the soft shoulders of the roads near where I live who carries a large wooden one. He is a nut who read that in the bible jesus wants us to pick up our crosses and follow him. What a dumbass. It looks very profound, though.

Many Christian churches display crucifixes. It helps Christians remember what Jesus did for us. How can God be against crucifixes? He was on one.

The counselor probably would have tried to convince your friend that his religion was the problem no matter what religion he belonged to.

I'm sure that there are no crucifixes hanging on the walls of heaven. The angels and saints don't need to be reminded of Jesus sacrifice, because he is in heaven now offering his sacrifice to the Father. Read Revelations.

I am a member of the LDS (mormon) church, and though there isn't exactly official church policy on the matter, you won't find a crucifix anywhere on our chapels or temples, and not on most members. The reason for this is that the crucifix is a symbol of the death and suffering of Christ. We recognize that His atonement is the greatest gift the world has ever been given, but feel that dwelling on his death over-shadows one of the most important things of all-- His resurrection. Many people wear the crucifix as a reminder and a symbol of their faith, and the LDS church thinks this is a good thing. It is just the culture of the LDS church to remember in different ways.

I think the only way God would be against a crucifix is if the wearer looks to it as an idol. God wants us to worship Him not any images. Personally I wear a cross w/o Jesus on it as a reminder of what He did for me. But I think it's your own personal preference. As for the church I would look into some of their other beliefs. There are some whacked out views out their. If you find no other major faults w/ the church I'd say they were ok. Maybe the counselor is against God. Who knows. Good luck to you and your friend.

We don't know the will of God.It's open to each individuals interpretation.Personally,I feel that God has nothing against us having Crucifixes in our midst. It serves as a reminder to us of what was done for our eternal lives. Peace....

About the cross. The cross is symbolic to many catholics. But look at it this way. Would Jesus longingly look back at his torture stake? With loving thoughts of the pain?
Suppose someone shot your mother. Would you wear a toy gun on a chain around your neck, and kiss it?
Do you think god agrees with what I have said?
