Fruits and vegetables, Lean meats or poultry, fish, whole grains, low fat dairy products, lots of water also. A daily vitamin is also a good idea.

Well, you should always eat from every food group...but in different servings. Eat plenty from the bottom of the food group, (wheat, bread, cereal etc...) and smaller your portions going up. Especially when you are at the sweets group because that has the most calories and fat. So, you need to stay away from the sweets as much as possible. But, you need to at least eat a little because it gives you energy so that you can exercise. So, just watch what you eat, and you will do fine.

Water: everyone forgets this - you should be drinking at least two litres a day. Tea and such do count, but compensate for caffeinated drinks by drinking extra pure water.
Fruit and veg: Get as much in as you can, and at least 5 portions a day. Try and vary the colours - different colours mean different nutrients.
Grains: Go for whole grains / wholemeal and bran wherever possible and try to avoid refined products (white bread, white rice, cakes, etc etc)
Proteins (meat / fish / beans / nuts etc) - you need a good amount of these but excess will often just be excreted unused or stored as fat. Try and get a couple of portions of fish in a week.
Dairy: Go for lower-fat options like skimmed milk, but check in "low fat" items they haven't chucked a tonne of sugar in to keep your cravings up.
Stuff you don't need to eat:
Chocolate, crisps, cakes, hamburgers, french fries, risottos, heavily processed ready meals, mash...

Look at the food pyramid, little or no fats/sugars, 2 1/2 cups of vegetables, 2 cups of fruits, 6 oz. servings of grains, 3 cups of milk, and 5 1/2 oz. of meat and beans. You need to drink 8 glasses of water also.
