One of my relatives' occupation is noted as a 'Coal Chewer' and while 'Hewer' sounds more probable, I swear this word is Chewer.

Before the industrial revolution really got under way crushing machines were few and far between,and as most of the boilers at that time could only burn small pieces of coal the mines used to employ small boys to chew the larger lumps of coal down to a suitable size.

The guy below (see link) reckons what looks like a capital C may be a parenthesis or fancy slash (or maybe just some administrative mark)

... so Coal Hewer seems more correct.
