I'm very intersting why are some people so passionate about religion. And what can they get in return from that belief?

Specially because I don't understand the word from the bible. It has no meaning and it's written in some old way....
I'm sorry, but it's true.

I'm sure there are many people in your country in Europe that can quote Book-Chapter-Verse, they just choose not to. While I don't consider myself a 'religious' person I do have a good working knowledge and understanding of the Bible. In some cases I can quote Chapter/verse (very few), but for the most part I can give you text or a close approximation of what was said and meant.

Your friends may know chapter/verse and choose not to cite it....as it intimidates a lot of people (and that's why I don't even bother learning it by chapter/verse.....I don't want to scare people away from God).

I am not from the USA. I know the bible VERY WELL after 30 years of reading. I have DUNG-loaded it to my computer and can search and find all the tidbits and contradictions very easily. I treasure it not because I believe it is of divine origin - I don't; it's myths - , rather, it is the first most popular book written in the English Language and it was one of the powerhouses that spread English civilization across the world. Europe has become a better place without religion. (With love from Guyana)

really? Wow. Well, I can say for myself, I love to know that I'm saying what is biblically true by constantly going back to the Word of God, and using it in reference. But if ya'll can have awesome biblical conversations without mentioning the bible, then that's cool too. The Bible doesn't always have to be in the conversation, the coversation just always has to be true according to the bible.

and yes, my bible goes with me absolutely everywhere I go. I was in a diner today having a theological discussion with my friend and we both had our bibles out.

I'm from Houston, TX, born and raised!

Are the discussions about God at least based in the Bible even though there may not be any bible around?

I'm sorry you are in that position. Europe has been deteriorating spiritually for years. I mean that as a statement of fact and not as an insult. I am from the USA, a seminary graduate but I have any number of friends that simply went to Sunday School and now attend church who know the Bible quite well. The only difference between them and me and them is I can read it in Greek, Hebrew, latin and Aramaic

Im in England, and some things I know off the top of my head (eg Psalm 23 - The Lord is my shepherd) other times I will grab the Bible from my book shelf which is right next to the computer.

That's exactly right. They're religious. Their allegiance is to a religious organization, not to God. One who spends time in the Bible gets to know God, and know how He expects us to live.

We are called "believers" because we believe what the Bible says. We believe that Jesus is the only Son of God, born of a virgin, lived to show us how to live, and died in our place. God is righteous, and the debt of sin had to be paid. Jesus paid the price for all of mankind when He died on the cross. God accepted His sacrifice. Now it is up to each one to accept the free gift of salvation. Entrance into heaven is only accomplished by acknowledging that no one is good enough to get there on his own. Only by believing in the One true Savior and confessing that He alone is Lord can we enter heaven.

Eternity is a really long time. The alternative is hell. There is no inbetween. Not making a choice is making the choice to go to hell.

I'm not from the USA ... I live in China ... I do know what I'm saying and if you're gonna answer on a forum like this it helps to quote the actual bible verses instead of spouting rubbish ...

Much more authentic that way ...

USA.. and yes, I have 2 Bibles sitting right next to me, and I read it daily! It helps to live right, and communicate. When you read a novel you feel you know the characters when you are done, same thing with the Bible, you feel you know God, Peter, Luke David...

I find that strange they do not, because that is the true source of spiritual insight.

Jesus said in John 17:17 - "Your word is truth."
Paul wrote in 2Timothy 3:16, 17 that all Scripture was inspired by God for our benefit and instruction.
We gain life from getting to know God and Jesus, as Jesus himself mentioned in his prayer to God as recorded in John 17:3. We get to know them through reading and studying about them in the Bible.
