A freestanding highchair is best as you can sit in front of him/her to feed. Wood is harder to clean than plastic, even though they look pretty. Plastic ones are easy to clean, many of them fold for easy storage and transportation. If your baby is not sitting on his/her own, look for one that is adjustable height and back positions. Look for one that's sturdy wide based. Legs too close togeather won't hold up to a wiggly baby. Find one with a washable removable cloth cover for baby's comfort. No sharp edges like a metal one for baby to hurt himself on, no fancy design that will be hard to clean, easy to remove tray for easy baby in and out and cleaning, it should have a seatbelt.
I bought an adjustable Graco one for my two, but Safety First, Cosco, etc... are fine too and not too expensive.

If you plan on waiting the recommended 6 months to start solids, I'd suggest NOT buying a high chair and getting a booster seat instead. I wish we had not had a high chair. They are hard to clean and take up a lot of space. There are great booster seats that are easier to clean and can strap right to a chair so they don't take up much space. They can be folded up to store in a cabinet or closet or easily taken along with you on vacation or to visit friends/relatives. You can get a good booster seat from $15 to $25! The one below is the one we bought. We used it far more than our high chair.

brands aren't really important, as they will get disgusting reguardless. Children are very messy eaters. That's like getting a chenille blanket for a newborn, they'll just spit up and pee/poop on it. So anyways, make sure you get one that the lining is not cloth, you'll have to stick in the wash everyday. Ones that are plastic, and you can wipe off easily are best. Make sure it can recline, kuz at 4 months, most babies can't sit up themselves. And ones with adjustable heights are great for pushing it under the table when they are ready. Other than that, they're all the same.

the easyness of cleaning, I find I hate the ones with chair lining, because the crumbs and food will always find a way between it. The adjustability of the highchair, height wise. The ease of baby insertion and removal. Up to saftey code. Graco has several differnt styles.

first of all, brand new babies don't fit well in high chairs. and even at 4-5 months they flop over. i fed my babies in the bouncy. ask around. others have fed their kids in the carseat. if you don't have room for a highchair---try a booster seat. they are $15-20 and take up very little room. and are more snug. worse case is that you buy one, and if you don't like how it works with your infant---you can put it away til they are older. we've had limited space. with my first, we didn't get a highchair---just happened to work out that way. i bought a booster seat for a vacation we took when she was 4 months. it worked. she never used a highchair. then with my son, someone bought a highchair for us when he was about 6 months old. it was always in the way and hard to clean. i used it for about 4 months---and decided to just go out and buy another booster chair. now, with my 9 month old. i used the high chair for maybe a month. he was fine in it, but it's big and takes up a lot of room. right now, it's in my garage. if you really want a high chair. try IKEA. they have a real nice wooden one...that you can use for awhile. my friend has this one and it fits right up to the table. http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15567&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=11083&langId=-1&categoryId=15667&chosenPartNumber=20051022
if you get a booster---the swivel tray is terrible.
we have 2 of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DEW8N/sr=1-1/qid=1154442727/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-2691496-7722564?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products

How much space you have to store the high chair. If you have a dishwasher the ones with the removable trays are nice where you can pop it off and toss it in the dishwasher (or you can wash by hand).
In my apt, we were tight on space, so we had a chair that went from infant reclining to a booster seat that attached to our kitchen chair. It had a removable tray.
Also, they have ones with a 5 point harness in them. I recomend one with that since it will help to keep your child from climbing out.
Good Luck!
