I am not sure where you get 42 from, I am not good with anything cryptic, but my theory is

Everyone has their own meaning of life, in a theological measure. I believe that the basics of it is that you live life to the full, don't waste any of your life on meaningless things and don't hurt others in malice.

No-one epects you to be a saint, but make your life make a positive differnce in someone elses life and die without regret.

The meaning of life is found in the understanding of your soul. Your life is an opportunity to nurture your soul. Everything you do, everything you say, and even everything you think, affects your soul. (So be careful of the thoughts that enter your mind.)

Your soul is nurtured by three things, (1) seeking knowledge, truth, & wisdom, (2) practicing love, service and selfless sacrifice, and (3) relishing everything in this world that is beautiful. Surround yourself in things that are beautiful and find beauty everywhere and in everyone. When you do this you will find that these three things are actually all the same. There is a blending of truth and beauty, of beauty and love and love for truth. When you are able to see all things working for this perfection and you, yourself a part of this perfection, then you will find your answer. Enjoy the ride.

The "Meaning of Life" is a song by Eric Idle of Monty Python fame.

The Meaning of Life
Why are we here? What's life all about?
Is God really real, or is there some doubt?
Well, tonight, we're going to sort it all out,
For, tonight, it's 'The Meaning of Life'.
What's the point of all this hoax?
Is it the chicken and the egg time? Are we just yolks?
Or, perhaps, we're just one of God's little jokes.
Well, ça c'est le 'Meaning of Life'.

Is life just a game where we make up the rules
While we're searching for something to say,
Or are we just simply spiralling coils
Of self-replicating DNA. Nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay.

In this 'life', what is our fate?
Is there Heaven and Hell? Do we reincarnate?
Is mankind evolving, or is it too late?
Well, tonight, here's 'The Meaning of Life'.

For millions, this 'life' is a sad vale of tears,
Sitting 'round with rien nothing to say
While the scientists say we're just simply spiralling coils
Of self-replicating DNA. Nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay.

So, just why-- why are we here,
And just what-- what-- what-- what do we fear?
Well, ce soir, for a change, it will all be made clear,
For this is 'The Meaning of Life'. C'est le sens de la vie.
This is 'The Meaning of Life'.

I believe in 3 phases of life,,, in the womb, on earth, and the life beyond this one. I believe God creates us out of His Love and desire to share. We live a time here to learn and grow and develop, especially in Love. We have tests. I believe that those who do choose to Love, who do the best they can to be merciful, sharing, and committed to working for the common good, go to heaven. Heaven is our goal after this pilgrmage here, and there we do share fully in God's Life in Love and joy forever.
