My friend wants to go on one of those 'lose 10 pounds in 3 days' diets, this one is from something called the British Heart Institute. I have never heard of the BHI, nor can I find any reference to them apart from the diet itself. It is one where one eats toast and tuna fish and the like for a chemical breakdown to burn off unwanted fat.

I am worried that at best this will dissapoint her if it doesn't work, or at worst be dangerous to her health as it doesn't offer a balaned diets.

If anyone knows anything I'd be grateful of an honest response. Thanks

Like you, I have never heard of the BHI. I think they are relying on people confusing them with the British Heart Foundation and assuming it must be a good idea. The BHF have disassociated themselves from this mad-cap diet. This diet may not actually do her any harm - tuna fish and toast for three days would certainly be dull and I suspect unsatisfying but it won't kill her - and she may even lose weight, but it's not going to fix any problem she has with her weight. I had heart surgery 18 months ago (planned, for a genetic condition) and am overweight. I have managed to lose 2.5 stone since my op and want to shift another 3 stone at least. I have done it with Weight Watchers and it's good sensible advice with your health at it's core. Get your friend off to a meeting - you go too and support her, even if you don't need to lose more than a few pounds. I mean ALL women think they could lose a few pounds lol Get her on the right track and keep her confidence up and she'll do it - without unreliable quick-fixes which don't deliver. Good luck to her and well done to you for being such a good friend. You're one of her best weight loss strategies!

3 day diets work, but only for three days and not when you are due on your period. Women normally gain a little weight at that time.

If anyone needs to lose weight they should have a whole change of lifestyle and exersize and have a balanced healthy diet. do not eat until full. It really is very very simple to describe, but for some, very difficult to do.

I was always really very skinny until I was about 25 - 26 and when I was skinny, I could eat anything and never put on an ounce. I thought fat paople were weak and lazy.

since my metabolism slowed (the only thing I can think of that caused me to gain weight, as I was eating the same) I put on quite a lot of weight and decided to diet, thinking it would be easy.

BOY was I WRONG!!! It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. more difficult that stopping smoking, more difficult than stopping caffiene.

but the only relaible way to lose weight and keep it off, is to have abalanced diet and exersize. but do not forget, that if you exersize, you may gain a slight amount of muscle mass. musle weighs a lot more than fat, and so you may drop clothe's sizes, but still put on weight. if this happens do not dispair. it's good, you have gained muscle, and muscle burns more calories than fat, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you can consume without gaining fat.

It doesn't work, i tried it and it was hell... especially not being able to drink tea or coffee for 3 days... plus the food was horrid, the combinations were so weird and tiny..(half a cup full) ... i lost a little bit of weight but it was only water I'm sure...i didn't look any different... and you are sooo hungry after the three days are up all you can think about is eating something fatty... and then you might as well have not done it to start with. Honestly its not worth the hassle... tell her to try something that helps you know more about what your putting in your mouth.. buy a calorie counter book (Link below) and get her to write everything down that she eats and work out the calorie content... it really makes you think!.... :)

Your friend won't do herself any harm as it's only for 3 days (she would, if it went on longer). She will probably lose a little weight but, sadly, it won't be fat, only water and glycogen (the way your body stores energy for immediate use), and she will put anything she loses back on as soon as she starts to eat normally again.

This sort of "diet" is great if you want to flatten off your tum before a big party or similar event, but no good for serious weight-loss. There are simply no short cuts to losing weight - I wish there were!

I have a friend who tried this every Monday to Wednesday for 4 week and lost about 15 - 20 lbs in total ( and kept it off). The food isn't great but the results will be worthwhile. I do however advocate that your friend does exercise also as this will help to keep the weight off.

Also make sure not to go mad after the 3 days are completed

First stop listening to these morons that claim this is safe. Losing 2lbs per week is safe. Second, get your lazy @ss into a gym and start working out. Diets only put the weight back on (plus some). You are never going to look better until you put the time and effort in. Quit trying to take the easy way out.

Yes, they do work but one has to do the following as well
1) Get up real early and jog 30 km
2) Relax for one hour, and do a serious workout in your local gym
3) Get into your favorite joga position for at least an hour
4) Get into the hotest sauna that your body can handle
5) Repeat the above late afternoon
