I actually have a 10 second rule. It sometimes it takes the better part of 5 seconds to anaylize what just happened. And then once you decide to enforce the 5 second rule, 5 seconds are up. Therefore in the next 5 second period, you can make a sober and informed decision.

Sadly No. The five-second rule is a popular old wives' tale, in North America and the United Kingdom, about eating food that's been dropped on the floor.

When you drop food on the ground, it depends on several factors on how "dirty" it will get. Cleanliness of ground, wetness of food, etc. Any germs and such on the ground will be picked up by the food, regardless of time. It doesn't matter if you wait 1 second or 10.

The five-second rule is seldom invoked in the case of sticky foods, such as ice cream, cold cuts, or jelly beans which have been moistened, particularly if visibly dirty.

The exact origin of the five-second rule is unknown.

I think myth busters tested this. The difference between a split second and a full 5 seconds, in regards to the amount of bacteria on the food was minimal.

Do what you want. But I ain't eating it!

actually, the five second rule does not exist. i was watching it on mythbusters (:P) and they took samples of the food they had dropped on to their floor for 2 seconds and six seconds. when they saw the specimens the next day, it turns out each peice of food had just about the same bacteria collected. hope i could help :)

I use the five second rule all the time...I'm very clumsy and my floors are very clean...in those five seconds I usually Inspect the thing that fell and blow on it to make myself feel better...I don't use it if the food is wet or sticky in any way...that stuff is just lost...or surrendered to the dog.

five second rule only applies if you know where you dropped it, like on your own floor, pick it up and blow it off. if you are outside or at work, nada. we have used the rule since i was young, and it got passed on to my kids, who are 24, 21, 17 and the 24 year old has passed it to his two kids. We are all healthy, well and alive.

The Mythbusters proved that there are just as many germs when it first hits the floor, as there are when it's been on the ground for a long period of time.

So the answer is no, but I still play it anyway.

the same germs get on it no matter if its 5 seconds or 30 seconds, except maybe even more with every milisecond that passes by.
