My mother taught me to take the chicken and wash it off really well before doing anything with it. He just takes it out of the pack from the grocery store and sticks it on the stove. It makes me about sick to see him do this. I wonder what kind of creepy crawlers are waiting to give me salmonella if I eat it. Shouldn't he be washing it off?

We don't wash chicken, my mother never does, my mother in law doesn't - in fact I've never come across people who always wash chicken. So he's not alone!
Also, I've never seen the phrase "wash the chicken" in a cookbook - even beginner books. Not to say it isn't a good idea, as long as you dry it well before cooking.

Do I need to rinse chicken before cooking?
Advice on this has varied over the years, including the advice Frank gives. The latest research shows that from a health point of view, washing is not necessary. Any microbes that you'd wash off will be entirely destroyed by heat when you cook the meat. It's actually far more important to wash your hands, your cutting board, and your utensils since they won't be sterilized by cooking.

salmonella comes from undercooking, not underwashing, some people wash their clothes before wearing also. don't have to wash chicken or clothes before using.

Never have washed my chicken, what kills the bad stuff is the cooking, the high heat.
