Dr. James D. Hardy headed the medical team at the University of Mississippi Medical Center that performed the first human lung transplant in 1963, the first animal-to-human heart transplant in 1964, and a double-lung transplant that left the heart in place in 1987. (Dr. Hardy died in February of 2003.)

Three years after Hardy transplanted the chimpanzee heart, South African surgeon Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful human-to-human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on 3 December 1967. (Dr. Barnard died Sept 2, 2001.)

Note: The first transplanted heart (animal to human) beat for 90 minutes before it stopped. The first human to human transplanted heart beat a full 18 days before it stopped!

Christiaan Barnard was the one listed as being the first. Paul Harvey told the sotry a while ago about this. There was actually a black doctor that did the lead work with Christiaan Barnard. He is in the pcitures and is listed as the "gardener" because of Apartheid.
