the cross and the whole action of going to the cross is synomous with Christ's sacrifice for us :) So when he is saying, take up your cross, he is saying cross in the literal sense, but usuing the phrase figurativly. Does that make sense? lol. The most important part of that verse, tho, is the beginning. "If anyone is to come after me, he should deny himslef, take up his cross, and follow me." It means that you should deny your will (it's selfish and greedy and lost) and follow wholy Christ's will, which can only lead to good (as I know from experience).

It means to be willing to strive to live for Him and to accept what suffering and possibly verbal, and even physical abuse the world may throw at you. Our Crosses are our trials and struggles in this life.

Take up the cross is a reminder that we are dead (figuratively). In order to have life, we must first die to ourselves. In modern terms we need to overcome our own ego, stop striving for ourselves, surrender to God. To live in the spirit is to not be ruled over by our own body (including our ego).

The physical cross was a burden. Since He died on it for us, then we must bare things from day to day... various tests and struggles.
