Patriotism is pledging love, allegiance, and protection to your native land. In the past women were second class citizens so the only people that mattered in patriotism were the men. In those days men only LOVED women (or only publicly did). They protected them cherished them were loyal to them and loved--just like they were to their native land. So nations were refered to in the feminine and so were boats.

Then there is the "mother earth" thing.

It is mainly females of any species that reproduce or are receptacles to multiply. Countries as such, just like the earth, are considered to be of female gender. Countries also produce people and many things are produced by them and they survive because of these produces. Thus countries are considered female. Any way I am just being logical.

Probibly because of the care they take for them, the love they have for them, and more, making them felmale-like in thier opinions.

As to mother earth: Gaia, the godess of earth, and maker of the world, was a female. Therefore; mother earth.

I guess the same reason people name boats, guns, cars, planes, etc. It's just men applying terms of endearment to these things as they would a woman.
