The gun has its own positive and negative terminal... or for that matter HOT and GROUND... the charge flows from one end terminal to the other because that happens to be the path of least resistance. Grounding yourself wont make a difference because that ground source will not be the path of least resistance. The pain is created directly created where the gun is place on the victim.

Well, my physics teacher always said experimentation was always the best answer -- go for it! Got a volunteer? :-)
Anyway, check out the wonderful article from Wikipedia linked below. It may not *exactly* answer your question, but it has a wonderful amount of information about all types of electric shock prods, right up to the newest wireless ones -- great reading. Did you know that TASER stands for Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle? Neat!

The current from the probes in the TASER travel from one probe to the other. It would be possible to be shocked if you touched a railing between the probes but not anywhere outside of closed curcuit that is created by the probes.

Nope. The gun has both + and - terminals. There are two wires. What the subject is touching won't make any difference.

Yes, if that person is touching it and you put the stun gun to that same thing, it will shock them.
